Summary
Mohamed Salleh Eusoofjee or MSE Angullia was a merchant from Rander, India that amassed a sizeable fortune from his trade. Wanting to give back to the community, he set up a Wakaf, through his will (Wasiat) dated Jun 1898, that includes shophouses and directed for the income from these properties to be given to charity. The trustees then extended the wakaf objectives for education, to better utilise the sizeable wakaf income.
The Angullia Legacy in Singapore
Mohamed Salleh Eusoofjee (MSE) Angullia, a third-generation merchant from Rander, India, became a prominent figure in Singapore’s Indian Muslim community by the late 19th century. He amassed a fortune through trade and, in his 1898 will, directed some of his properties to be held in Charitable Trust (Wakaf Am), including Masjid Angullia on Serangoon Road.
The MSE Angullia Wakaf has supported charitable causes and less fortunate beneficiaries in places like Mecca, Medina, Rander, Baghdad, and Singapore since 1904, continuing strong to this day. Masjid Angullia, first built on Wakaf land in 1890, was rebuilt in 1970 with funds from the public and the Wakaf. After a $6.3 million renovation in 2020, the mosque, located on one of Singapore’s busiest roads, retains its North Indian architecture with its iconic gatehouse now gazetted as a conserved structure.
MSE Angullia’s son, Ahmad Mohamed Salleh (AMS) Angullia, followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming the first trustee of his father’s will and establishing his own Wakaf to help the poor and needy. Today, the Angullia family continues to manage Masjid Angullia, continuing their legacy of charity and community support in Singapore.
