Summary
A wealthy Arab Muslim lady, Sheriffa Zain Alsharoff Alsagoff, gave this particular wakaf via a Wasiat in February 1937 for the income to support Madrasah Alsagoff, an Islamic school set up by her family. She is also the great-granddaughter of the famous philanthropist, Hajjah Fatimah who built Masjid Hajjah Fatimah, the first mosque in Singapore to be named after a woman. Besides this property, Sheriffa Zain also gave the iconic Red House along East Coast Road into another Wakaf.

Sheriffa Zain and Her Legacy

Sheriffa Zain, the great-granddaughter of philanthropist Hajjah Fatimah (who built Masjid Hajjah Fatimah, the first mosque in Singapore named after a woman), was married to Syed Abdul Rahman Taha Alsagoff, also known as Engku Aman, after whom Engku Aman Road near Geylang Serai is named. She was also the daughter of Syed Mohamed Ahmad Alsagoff, founder of Madrasah Alsagoff Al-Arabiah and creator of Wakaf SMA Alsagoff.

In 1937, Sheriffa Zain created several Wakaf, bequeathing properties such as 4 Upper Dickson Road and the iconic Red House along East Coast Road. She passed away in April 1968 and was buried at the family cemetery at Masjid Hajjah Fatimah.
