Site 7: Masjid Sultan

Summary

As one of the oldest mosques in Singapore having been built in 1824, and later rebuilt in 1924 into the current structure, Masjid Sultan is a beneficiary to multiple wakafs set up by pioneers in the Kampong Gelam area. The mosque stands as a monument of the district and is also open to visitors who are interested to learn more about Islam.

Sometime after the mosque was rebuilt in 1924, several Wakaf were created in the vicinity of Kampong Gelam to support Masjid Sultan. They are:
a) Wakaf Hadji Khadijah Hadji Abd Hadi – 719 North Bridge Road
b) Wakaf Shaik Taha Mattar – 6 Jalan Pisang
c) Wakaf Aisa Bte Haji Vali Mohamed – 14 Haji Lane

The enduring support from the Malay, Arab, and Indian communities during that era, which continues to resonate to this day, underscores the profound significance of the mosque and reflects the spirit of camaraderie among the diverse groups of Muslims at that time.
